Necco sold Mackintosh's popular toffee Rolos in the US market through a partnership agreement from 1956-1969. After that, Necco needed a similar replacement candy. In 1975, they debuted the Milk Chocolate Caramel Roll. It was a direct competitor to Rolo, which was now being made by Hershey for the US market. With the rising cost of sugar, Hershey replaced the creamy toffee still used in the UK version of Rolo with less expensive caramel.

As I recall, the Caramel Roll was good! However, it’s tough to top the popularity of Rolo, which is still rolling on strong.
